For future reference, it's in our hands

In Amsterdam, Reinier Evers, the founder of consumer website trendwatching.com, makes a living from the future. He is very much into coining phrases such as "minipreneurs", "couchsurfing" and "upgradia" to predict trends — and give them a push along.

...in fact, Reinier Evers has taken to saying that “trends are the new trend.” He says this with a bit of a wink, but still, he’s in a position to know: he is the founder of a company called TrendWatching, which by his reckoning has identified more than 60 trends since 2002.

King of Cool

Serial entrepreneur Reinier Evers loves searching for cool new ideas. But while most business people keep their ideas to themselves, Evers makes his money by sharing, leading the industry in commercial trendspotting. IT WAS JULY 2001, AND THE DOTCOM CRASH WAS CUTTING ITS SWATHE THROUGH THE WORLD OF BUSINESS, BUT DUTCHMAN REINIER EVERS HAD JUST BECOME ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES. He had sold his online food delivery company, Urbanbite, to Lastminute.com, and immediately began looking for the next idea to put his money into. But he was soon to discover that when you’re a born entrepreneur, one idea is never enough.

Cool-hunting on the web

Trend spotters are combing through the world of blogs in a feverish search for the next big thing. Mary Riekert reports. ON THE frontlines of cool, bloggers with street cred are the unwitting quarry of forecasters anxiously scanning the net in the hope of spotting just one thing: the next big trend. The forecasters have a wide net to cast in: there are an estimated 100 million blogs worldwide, about 450,000 of which are in Australia. Online encyclopedia Wikipedia says the concept of "cool-hunting" evolved in the early 1990s and refers to a new breed of forecasters who spot trends and add their interpretation to developments in fashion and culture.

The web is now an interactive style bible par excellence. Simon Kurs discovers a global hip parade Once, fashion fans were more concerned with the newest designs from Burberry rather than the latest version of BlackBerry, but now the web has become the hippest hang-out around. It is to the noughties what Andy Warhol’s Factory studio was to the 1960s: a meeting point for the hottest creative talents, and the place to report or unearth a new trend, artist, designer, band, hotly tipped restaurant or exhibition. The difference today is that there’s no guest list — anyone with a web connection can join.

The Scottish school for scoundrels

Lunchtime at Lickleyhead Castle, and there's a bit of a spaghetti incident. In the drawing room, the stately fire roars. In the kitchen, the chef beavers away. And in the dining room, half a dozen men look despondently down at their plates. It's potentially today's sternest challenge: consuming a plate of spaghetti bolognaise, by means of fork alone. "Some people cut spaghetti," shudders our hostess Diana Mather, at the head of the never-ending dining table. "Some even eat it with a spoon. This is not correct and it is not allowed."

Target's Trendmaster Keeps Moving

Trend guru Robyn Waters is perhaps best known as the mastermind behind Target's high-profile, high-revenue "design-for-all" marketing strategy. Since she left her post as vice-president of design, trend, and product development at "Tar-zhay," as fashionistas lovingly refer to the hip discount chain, Waters has gone on to form her own consulting firm, RW Trend, and write a book, The Trendmaster's Guide from A to Z. On her company's home page, she's billed as "Champion of Design" and "Cheerleader of Possibilities" -- and she brings a peppy, bright approach to the practice of marketing that recalls the cheery ads that her former employer is known for.

The health club industry, but not as we know it

Presently, there are 2,900 private health clubs in the UK, which is one for every 15,000 adults. Let's now move forward to 2016. Do you think there has been significant consolidation? Has there been a steep rise in the number of clubs? Do you think the service proposition has slowly evolved since 2006 or has a disruptive innovation occurred sending the industry on a fundamentally new path? Many brands benefit from 'trend watching' as a tool to provide insight into the rapid pace of change effecting their consumers. This is particularly acute in service industries where the nature of the relationship between the consumer and the brand can be volatile. A single negative experience can quickly turn a raving fan into a raging critic.

Trend-spotting can boost business

Whether your revenues are down, your cash flow needs a jolt, or it's simply time to expand your customer base, trends can provide a much-needed jump-start for your small business. Let's face it. Larger companies are used to trend-watching and have gotten pretty darn good at it. They regularly spend the money to pick out influential ideas and convert them into must-have consumables for their customers. But why shouldn't your small or home-based business be able to do the same?

Wafting of individuality

FORMER Miss Malaysia 2003 Elaine Daly has taken to spraying herself with her Grand Amour perfume whenever she heads out to high society events these days. Part of the appeal of the perfume created by French perfumer Annick Goutal, says Daly, is that “no other woman is wearing the same scent as mine!” The fad now is for fragrances that people do not recognise easily. Ken Lim, of multi-brand boutique Kens Apothecary, says the trend began in Europe last year and Malaysians have caught on.
