Driverless mobility is moving from bold promises to real-world proof

Tesla and Waymo are supporting autonomous ride-hailing claims with evidence from live operations. Outside observers are tracking unsupervised Tesla rides, Waymo is carrying paying passengers, and both companies are introducing vehicles designed for autonomous service. Each development provides a different measure of commercial progress.

Outside observers recorded 170 fully driverless Tesla robotaxi rides across 54 vehicles in Austin, Texas. Tesla is also expanding unsupervised operations to Dallas and Houston. Because the rides take place on public roads, third parties can observe and count activity independently of Tesla’s reporting.

Waymo is carrying fare-paying passengers in its Zeekr-built Ojai minivans across San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The vehicles use Waymo’s sixth-generation self-driving hardware and software. Paid rides establish that the Ojai is operating as a commercial service. Profitability, utilization and performance at city scale require further evidence.

Tesla has started employee rides in its Cybercab in Austin ahead of a planned commercial launch. The vehicle was designed specifically for autonomous operation, moving Tesla’s service toward hardware developed around driverless use from the beginning. Employee rides remain a pre-commercial stage.
