Apps are expanding through infrastructure operated by other companies

Uber, Octopus Energy and Wise are extending their apps by integrating networks operated by other companies. The partnerships add rail booking, EV charging and local QR payments without requiring each app to recreate the underlying infrastructure. This can accelerate expansion while making coverage, pricing and reliability partly dependent on external partners.

Uber added train ticket booking, PNR status checks and first- and last-mile connections to its India app through a partnership with ixigo. Customers can manage the rail booking and the journeys to and from the station within Uber. Ixigo supplies the booking infrastructure, while Uber provides the customer interface and surrounding transport services.

Octopus Energy’s Octopus Charge app combines pricing, live availability and payment for more than 200,000 EV chargers across the US, Canada and Mexico. Drivers can locate and pay for chargers operated by different providers through one interface. Octopus Energy owns the customer relationship while external charging networks provide the physical coverage.

Wise now lets customers scan Alipay+ QR codes and pay in local currencies while travelling across Asia. Alipay+ provides access to its existing merchant-acceptance network, extending where Wise customers can use their accounts for local payments.

TREND BITE

Apps are adding capabilities by integrating infrastructure that another organization already operates. Uber connects to ixigo’s booking system, Octopus Energy aggregates charging networks and Wise connects to Alipay+ merchant acceptance.

This model separates the customer interface from infrastructure ownership. It can extend reach with less physical development. Three innovation across mobility, energy and payments make this an early cross-category pattern. As more apps follow it, the strength of the customer offer will depend partly on infrastructure the app does not control.
