Building verification into the source
Synthetic images, counterfeit products and account takeovers are becoming harder to identify after they circulate. Apple, Diageo and Google are moving verification closer to the point of capture, manufacture or identity confirmation. A camera signature, bottle seal or biometric check creates evidence earlier in the process.
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro introduces Reference Image, which cryptographically signs a photo at the camera sensor when it is captured. The signature creates a record of the image’s origin that can later be checked. This builds provenance into the act of taking a photo instead of relying only on later analysis.
Diageo has introduced a smartphone-scannable seal that uses AI to read a physical fingerprint unique to each bottle cap. Shoppers can scan the seal before purchase to confirm the bottle’s origin and check whether it is genuine. The packaging carries its own verification information.
Google has added a video-selfie option for account recovery. When passwords, backup codes or other recovery methods are unavailable, a biometric capture can help users confirm their identity and regain access. The feature gives account holders another way to prove who they are during recovery.
