Personal data is beginning to shape how digital systems behave

OpenAI, Instagram and Function are using age, behavioral patterns and medical records to change how digital systems respond. OpenAI and Instagram use personal signals to add safeguards and oversight. Function uses clinical records to ground AI responses in an individual’s health data. These applications place personalization inside areas where an incorrect response can carry serious consequences.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens for users aged 13 to 17. The version includes mental-health safeguards, parental controls and guided learning tools such as Study Mode. Age determines which protections and controls apply, making it part of the product’s operating logic.

Instagram is rolling out a global feature that alerts parents when a teen repeatedly searches for suicide or self-harm-related content. Repeated search behavior triggers the notification, allowing the platform to respond to a developing pattern rather than treating each search as an isolated action.

Health platform Function launched a secure connector that allows members to share lab results and clinician-reviewed notes with ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. When a member enables the connection, the AI can use bloodwork, biomarker history and clinical notes as source material for its responses. Personal health records therefore influence the information an AI provides.

These innovations show two applications of the same design principle. Personal data can limit or supervise a system’s behavior, and it can make that behavior more specific to an individual. Both require clear rules about consent, access, inference and control.

This remains an early pattern concentrated in teen safety and personal health. Wider adoption will depend on which signals systems are permitted to use and how much authority those signals receive. Which personal information should be allowed to change how a digital system behaves?
