Bower Collective, ASICS and BAM are replacing fossil-based plastic in products where it performs a specific technical role. Their alternatives still need to contain liquid, cushion a run or keep out rain. The material and construction change, while the product remains familiar to use.
UK-based Bower Collective worked with biomaterials company Kelpi to develop a paper sachet for liquid hand wash. A seaweed-derived coating replaces the fossil-based plastic liner normally used to prevent leaks. The coating provides the required barrier while allowing the sachet to be recycled at home.
ASICS’ NIMBUS MIRAI 2 uses a plant-based midsole material and recycled polyester. The running shoe retains the cushioning needed for training and is designed for collection and recycling after use. This gives ASICS a way to recover its materials rather than lose them to general waste.
BAM’s Any Weather Mac is a waterproof coat made from 95% recycled polyester without petrochemical glues. Removing those glues allows the garment to be recycled without compromising its waterproof function. The Circular Textiles Foundation certified it as the UK’s first fully recyclable waterproof jacket.
