Helping parents keep Christmas secrets, Travelodge offers ‘wrapping rooms’

Travelodge is launching free wrapping rooms at three UK locations this December, responding to research showing that 40% of parents worry about their children discovering gifts before Christmas morning.

The budget hotel chain will open specially equipped rooms at its London Chiswick High Road, Manchester Piccadilly and Edinburgh Central properties on December 10th, available in 75-minute slots from 9 am to 5:15 pm. Rooms come stocked with wrapping paper, tape and festive decorations, plus refreshments and mince pies.

Travelodge's idea was sparked by a viral social media post showing a mother booking a hotel room specifically for wrapping presents in private, generating thousands of enthusiastic responses from other parents. According to the chain's research, more than a third of Britons have accidentally spoiled Christmas surprises by walking in during gift-wrapping sessions. No wonder, then, that 26% of Britons would consider booking a hotel for wrapping privacy, while others resort to alternatives like friends' houses (12%) or even their cars (7%).

The wrapping room concept illustrates how brands can respond to real parenting pain points with practical solutions rather than performative gestures. It's a low-cost intervention that acknowledges the logistical challenges of maintaining childhood wonder in homes where private space is scarce.

More broadly, it signals opportunities for hospitality brands to position themselves beyond accommodation — as providers of micro-experiences that solve specific, relatable problems. When 57% believe surprise is the essence of gift-giving, creating sanctuary spaces to preserve that surprise becomes genuinely valuable. What everyday rituals do your customers struggle to execute in peace?
