Real estate platform Redfin adds air quality scores to home listings

Arming prospective homebuyers with critical health information, Redfin now includes insights into air quality risks for nearly every US property on its brokerage and listings platform. Alongside a home's current Air Factor, estimates are also provided for the next three decades.

Air Factor scores are based on likely exposure to fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone; for projections, a climate-adjusted model considers how a location is affected by rising temperatures and changing humidity levels.

While air quality is a new addition to its listings, Redfin already featured a comprehensive overview of climate risk data for every property, with risk estimates for floods, fire, extreme heat and severe wind. All data is provided by climate research firm First Street.

Trend Bite

The urgency of considering air quality when deciding where to live is underscored by a surge in poor air quality days, up by 477% between 2000 and 2021 in the western United States, primarily due to wildfires. Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, cancer and other diseases. It also affects lung development and cognitive performance — so it's no wonder both home sellers and buyers are motivated by air quality concerns.

Redfin's initiative promotes transparency in the real estate market while demonstrating the growing importance of environmental considerations in housing decisions. As more people experience the effects of climate change firsthand, which data can your brand provide to help them understand their personal climate risks?
